Moana (2016)
(Rating: 8.6/10 - )

Moana is an upcoming 2016 computer animated, musical adventure film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Pictures.

It will be the 56th film in the Disney animated feature canon. Originally described as a "mythic adventure set around 2000 years ago and across a series of islands in the South Pacific.", the film will follow the journey of a spirited teenager named Moana as she embarks on a quest across the Pacific Ocean to save her people.

Plot

Three thousand years ago, the greatest sailors in the world voyaged across the vast South Pacific, discovering the many islands of Oceania. But then, for a millennium, their voyages stopped — and no one today knows why. From Walt Disney Animation Studios comes Moana, a sweeping, CG-animated adventure about a spirited teenager who sails out on a daring mission to prove herself a master wayfinder and fulfill her ancestors’ unfinished quest. During her journey, she meets the once-mighty demi-god Maui (voice of Dwayne Johnson), and together, they traverse the open ocean on an action-packed voyage, encountering enormous fiery creatures and impossible odds.

Trivia

700 drafts of the movie were written by the time of Jared Bush's first year on the project.
The film features the first major traditionally-animated character in a computer-animated Disney animated canon film, in the form of Mini Maui (animated by Eric Goldberg and Mark Henn).
By the time of Auli'i Cravalho's casting, Moana's design had already been finalized.
Heihei was initially portrayed as a hot-tempered bully, but his character was drastically changed and became "very, very stupid".
Some of the locations visited during the research trip to have influenced the film include Fiji, Samoa, and Tahiti.
Moana will not have a love interest in the film.
Moana is the first film in history to be translated into Tahitian.

Voice cast

  • Auli'i Cravalho as Moana Waialiki, the high-spirited sixteen-year-old daughter of a chief in a long line of navigators, who sets sail to an island with an almighty demigod to help save her family from annihilation. As her name means "ocean," she has an uncanny connection with it and all its creatures.
  • Louise Bush as the singing voice of pre-teen Moana
  • Dwayne Johnson as Maui, the legendary demigod who sets off with Moana on her journey.
  • Temuera Morrison as Chief Tui Waialiki, Moana's overprotective father and chief of Motunui Island.
  • Christopher Jackson as the singing voice of Tui
Nicole Scherzinger as Sina Waialiki, Moana's mother.
  • Rachel House as Gramma Tala, Moana's Grandmother. Like Moana, Tala shares a passion for the ocean.
  • Jemaine Clement as Tamatoa, a villainous 50-foot crab from Lalotai, the realm of monsters.
  • Alan Tudyk as Hei Hei, Maui and Moana's pet rooster, and described by director Ron Clements as "the dumbest character in the history of Disney animation."[13] Tudyk also voices a villager two other characters.
  • Oscar Knightly as Fisherman
  • Troy Polamalu as Villager #1
  • Puanani Cravalho as Villager #2

I'm often told by my friends that I get my hopes too high for movies. Like, constantly. According to my friends, it's better to go into a movie with low expectations. By keeping my moviegoing soul cynical, I can have those expectations pleasantly allayed without risk of disappointment. My friends tell me that it's not very logical to expect every movie to kick ass when there've been so many awful ones in the past.

This is because my friends are lame. I get hyped up for every single movie I go to see, and currently, I'm flipping out over an upcoming gem from Disney, Moana.

Moana, currently slated for a November 2016 release (though it was originally up for 2018), is the next in Disney's neverending line of animated princesses. And when I say neverending, I'm pretty sure I mean it. Between the TV show "Once Upon A Time" and the upcoming high school musical "Descendants", it's pretty clear (and not the least bit surprising) that this massive franchise is going to be bled for every last drop, and it'll like as not still be bleeding when I'm old enough to start my own online nostalgic review show focusing on movies like Shrek and Tangled.

All that said, the princess franchise is definitely getting interesting. First off, Moana is going to be Disney's first Polynesian princess. That's interesting to me for multiple reasons—primarily because I'm currently studying abroad in Chile and I'm hoping the movie will incorporate some of that crazy Rapa Nui mythology. It's also another step in diversity, which is always awesome, though this isn't technically Disney's first Polynesian character—I'm pretty sure that honor goes to Lilo from Lilo and Stitch.

I'm also really excited because Moana may be one of the most badass princesses yet. Hell, she may rival characters like Mulan, Pocahontas and Elsa.
